Veg ‘n’ Out: Downtown Disney
Vegan Treats and Downtown Eats at Disney
Disney World is Orlando’s tourist mecca with four theme parks, two water parks, dozens of themed resort hotels and countless places to grab a bite to eat. With that being said, this article is focused on vegetarian and vegan options at the Downtown Disney Marketplace.
I started my Downtown Disney Marketplace veg experience at the new Fresh A-Peel quick service dining pavilion, which is home to a vegan bakery. The easiest way to access the pavilion by car is to turn into Entrance 2 off Buena Vista Drive then park in Lot C or D. Enter Downtown Disney Marketplace and look for T-Rex Café, the new pavilion is right next to it with a bright orange exterior and sunny yellow awnings.
The main reason I ventured to Downtown Disney Marketplace that day was to check out the much anticipated Babycakes NYC Bakery. I first learned about these bakery delights at the Central Florida Earth Day. This vegan bakery offers goodies made all-natural, organic and with delicious alternatives free from the common allergens: wheat, gluten, dairy, casein and eggs. Their delicious treats also contain only unrefined sweeteners, which makes them a low-glycemic index food.
Babycakes NYC at Downtown Disney Marketplace bakes up fresh cupcakes, brownies, cookies, doughnuts, frosting shots and loaves. I chose the red velvet cupcake and a chocolate crunch doughnut for my guest and I to share. Doughnuts aren’t something I would normally choose, but my guest loves them and since it was vegan I thought I’d give it a try. Overall, the flavor was very good, rich chocolate icing atop a cakey texture indulgence. The vegan doughnut was tasty, but the cake part of it was slightly on the dry side. If paired with a soy latté, it would of been a complete hit.
The red velvet cupcake was awesome. Moist and flavorful cake accompanied by a thick layer of chilled creamy sweet icing. I would absolutely return to Babycakes for this cupcake alone.
Right next to Babycakes is a beverage bar with many excellent baked goods pairings such as coffee, soy milk lattés, cappuccinos, espressos, cinnamon horchata and other latin drinks.

The aforementioned pavilion also offers other veg meal dining options. The Fresh A-Peel menu has a chopped vegetable salad or wrap with mixed greens, crimini mushrooms, zucchini, carrots, roasted red peppers, tomatoes and eggplant croutons. They also offer a house-made veggie burger on a multigrain bun.
The Pollo Campero menu has vegetarian side items available such as sweet plantains, yuca fries, cole slaw and chips & fresh salsa. The center of the dining offers a serve yourself fresh salsa bar.
Earl of Sandwich claims to have ‘the world’s greatest hot sandwich.‘
Downtown Disney is home to the first Earl of Sandwich restaurant chain.
This is another quick service assembly line style dining venture Disney seems to have mastered. Swiftly look over the large overhead menus and place your order. Move down the line and gaze over the tempting ready to grab side items: The Earl’s Slaw, potato salad, pasta salad, fresh fruit cup, kettle chips and desserts.
I chose the hot caprese sandwich with fresh mozzarella, Roma tomato, fresh basil and balsamic vinaigrette. Although, the cheese was thicker than my liking, the sandwich was excellent. Flavorful basil, hot crusty artisan bread and sweet & tangy balsamic vinaigrette really hit the spot. Other veg options available include:
- Hot veggie sandwich: feta, lettuce, Roma tomato, cucumber, red onion, roasted red peppers and mediterranean dressing
- Caprese salad or flatbread wrap: field greens, fresh mozzarella, Roma tomato, fresh basil and balsamic vinaigrette
- House salad or flatbread wrap: field greens, Roma tomato, cucumber, croutons and choice dressing
- Tomato soup, smoothies, coffee and The Earl’s Grey Lemonade (fresh lemonade and Earl Grey tea)
